Winter Self-care - List of 50 foods


Winters are a lovely season where one gets time to nourish & rest, body & mind as needed. However, overdoing these is called laziness 😊 and not recommended. Weight gain is possible during winters, if one makes mistakes.



Winter special food items are delicious and good-to-have during this season. Suggestions below are vegetarian and might be more relatable to an Indian culture upbringing.


Here's a list of  food items in 6 categories to be considered & adapted during winters:

1. Nuts, Dryfruits & Seeds

  • Sesame seeds (Til)
  • Rajgira (Amarnath seeds)
  • Peanuts (Moongfali)
  • Almonds (Badam)
  • Walnuts (Akhrot)
  • Dates (Khajur)
  • Cashew nuts (Kaju)
  • Figs (Anjeer)
  • Pistachios


2. Grains & Pulses: 

  •  Bajra (Pearl millet)
  •  Ragi (Finger millet)
  •  Peas (Matar)
  •  Masoor lentils
  •  Corn seeds or flour
  •  Kidney beans (Rajma)
  •  Chana , Chola & Chana dal
  •  Toor / Arhar lentil

3. Spices 

  • Black pepper (Kali mirch)
  • Cinnamon (Dalcheeni)
  • Asafoetida (Hing)
  • Bay leaf (Tej patta)
  • Red chilli 
  • Mustard seeds
  • Ginger   
  • Fenugreek (Methi)
  • Clove (Laung)

4. Vegetables

  • Yellow pumpkin (Kaddu)

5. Green Leafy Vegees & Herbs

  • Tulsi or Basil leaves

  • Spinach (Palak)
  • Radish leaves (Mooli patte)
  • Dill leaves (Soya)

6. Fruits

  • Pineapple
  • Strawberry
  • Apple
  • Orange
  • Grapes
  • Papaya
  • Cherry

Milk is great to have during winters and goes well with few spices & dry fruits. It is an additional food item on this list. 

This list is curated from food habits as seen in a few families & Indian society, in general. Chosen foods are also based on Holistic healthcare principles of Ayurveda, TCM etc.

Consuming these food shall help almost everyone. If something doesn't suit someone, they can definitely, remove/ replace those items. Around 50 good-to-have foods are to be considered wisely and added to our existing kitchen grocery list, as applicable. This may add beneficial nutrition, variety and warmth to our winter diet.

It's also important to keep check on food intake to enable health & activity and for preventive care against sickness.
