Milk combinations breakfast for health

How to drink milk, what food goes well with it?
How to give milk to kids? these are few general queries by Ayurvedic diet enthusiasts.

A Swaadhin wellness member asked one such question on the group and a discussion on this topic is recorded in this post:

Query by Gauri:
"I don't have much faith in Horlicks , Bournvita etc.
So curious to know about natural diet beneficial for kids."

Response by Madhur (Swaadhin Wellness Org):
True , instead of going for Horlicks, Bournvita or commercially available Corn flakes with milk - it is recommended to consider replacing them with one or more of below natural, homely options:

1. Nuts, Seeds and Dry fruits
Examples: 'Badam' or Almonds, 'Kishmish' or Raisins, 'Chuara' or Dry Dates, Foxnut seeds, Coconut, 'Elaichi' or Cardamom etc.

2. Grains e.g.
a. Wheat, Jowar, Rajgira, Millets, Rice, Corn flour etc.) can be used in form of flour to make bread ('chapati') to be eaten with milk (replacing Corn-flakes)
b. Grains can be roasted, boiled and converted into a porridge or pudding ('Halwa', 'Kheer').

Grains which go well with milk (few listed in a. above), semolina ('Sooji'), Chana dal flour etc. can be used.
Vermicelli or 'sewai' can be roasted or boiled and added to milk.
Any pudding or porridge is generally made with roasting in pure ghee, adding dry fruits and milk to form a tasty sweet-dish.
Some of these are special festival dishes in India.
c. Dry roasted grains & dry fruits powder can be prepared and made ready to be added to milk. This prepares a tasty drink or malt (replacing likes of Bournvita or Coffee).
Examples: 'Millets malt' powder, 'Ragi huri hittu' can be either added directly to milk or further roasted along with pure ghee and dry fruits to prepare a malt. Badam powder can be mixed in milk for flavored & tasty drink.

d. Rice husk or flakes ('kheel', 'poha'), cooked rice, 'Makhana' (Fox nut or Lotus seeds) - can be used to mix directly in milk to prepare a healthy & tasty drink or processed further to prepare a pudding
e. Boiled Grain using broken Wheat, broken Rice, Oats etc. to make 'dalia' or porridge. This is considered a healthy & delicious breakfast using small size grain cooked & mixed to milk (boiled, roasted).

These combinations are a whole meal to give long-lasting strength, good fat & carbs combo, with pure ghee, milk, grains, nuts, seeds and dry-fruits etc. This nourishing diet can strengthen bones, muscles, nerves and might even increase weight (when taken regularly for few months). Such milk combination can provide much needed oiling (lubrication) and cooling, repair & regrowth of cells to the entire organ systems. This must be given regularly, to children and weak individuals.

3. Fruits
E.g. Ripe mango, ripe banana or chiku (sapota), dates, generally go well with milk.
Ayurveda , however forbids use of unripe or sour fruits with milk. The acid content of most fruits does not go well with milk and is considered wrong combination or 'viruddh ahara'.
While mixing a sweet fruit with milk, it is considered better to use cold or around room temperature (slightly warm) milk rather than Hot milk. This is precautionary to avoid any chemical reaction between milk and fruit acids.

Milk if taken in proper combination, shall work well for digestion. This may not increase acidity, gas, bloating or excess phlegm etc.

Healthy Milk-Roti bowl Recipe:

Make a crisp roti of wheat or any other (preferably organic, Satvic grain) flour. Apply ghee on this roti. Break/ crunch it into pieces in a bowl. Add sweet dry fruits, nuts or seeds to this bowl. Pour hot or cold milk on the roti chunks and dry-fruit combo (replacement of ready to use corn flakes from market).
This milk shall be generally sweet, if needed, sugar can be added (sugar candy or 'mishri' goes well or organic sugar can be added)
This healthy, ancient Indian dish ('doodh-roti') can be great for nourishment and strength.

If using cold milk, adding fruits and honey to this bowl works well to make it extra yummy.
Other roasted or powdered grains as mentioned above can also be used in the bowl either along with or replacing roti.

While making your bowl - make sure to choose & combine whatever goes well with milk.

Hope you enjoyed this milky treat.
Take charge of your nourishment!
