Calcium deficiency

Query by Reena:
My doctor suggested that Calcium intake is essential for bones at this age. I am taking milk but now concerned about any harmful effects from earlier discussion on possible issues with milk. What are few natural ways for gaining this nourishment of Calcium.

Responses:
Rainy:
1. Sesame seeds or Til ( white or black ) is very high in Calcium and can be consumed by eating dishes like chiki, laddoos etc.
2. Ragi or Nachni is good source of Calcium as well. It can be used to make dosa, roti etc.

Organic and homely preparation of dishes works best for health.

Madhur:
1. For calcium deficiency add lime or 'chuna' (a calcium oxide or hydroxide compound , white color - which is applied on betel leaf (paan)). Take only a pinch (chutki bhar) and add in milk or curd or fresh juice like pomegranate/sugarcane or water and consume once a day.
You may also apply a pinch of it on a betel leaf and add some green fennel seeds (saunf), a clove (laung) and any other spices/nuts etc. to make a healthy and tasty paan and enjoy as an after food refreshment.

2. Sitting in sunshine for 20 minutes in late morning and early evening helps produce Vitamin D, essential for absorption of Calcium by the body.

3. Milk which is God produced, baby food is very good for health, to make bones and develop the body of the young one (especially suitable for same species as the mother).
However, manufactured milk may be contaminated with chemicals/medicines/hormones/emotional pain of the tortured animal etc. as per earlier discussion on group with Rainy and others. Such milk can also cause harm (along with giving its natural benefits).

If you are getting pure milk of cow (naturally produced, organic), it is good for health, calcium and vitamins etc. However, milk is not an essential , daily drink for adults. We can definitely reduce it's consumption to minimum required. Pure, deshi ghee, curd etc. products made from natural, organic milk with less processing/machinery are great additions to diet plan for health. They can be consumed in small to moderate quantity, as needed for developing strength and nourishment.

Query by S. Sharma:
What's the alternative to 'chuna' if we can't get it abroad?

Response by Madhur:
